How to Get to Cairo ✈️🚆🚗

Cairo is not only the bustling capital of Egypt but also a major travel hub, making it incredibly accessible from various cities in Egypt and around the world. Whether you're arriving by plane, train, or road, there are several convenient options to get to Cairo, ensuring that your journey is as smooth as possible.

By Plane: Fly to Cairo with WayAway ✈️

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is Egypt’s busiest and largest airport, located approximately 22 kilometres northeast of the city centre. It serves as the primary gateway to Egypt, with numerous airlines offering both domestic and international flights. From cities like Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, or Sharm El Sheikh, flying is one of the fastest ways to reach Cairo, with direct flights available. International travellers can also easily find direct flights to Cairo from major cities across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

For the best flight deals, I recommend booking your flight through WayAway, which offers cash-back rewards on flights and other travel services. Plus, with a WayAway Plus membership, you can get 10% off your membership by using the code TP-385219, allowing you to save even more on your journey to Cairo and beyond!

By Train: Travel in Comfort from Major Egyptian Cities 🚆

Egypt’s rail network is well-developed, making train travel one of the most popular options for getting to Cairo from various regions in the country. If you’re coming from:

  • Alexandria: Trains between Alexandria and Cairo are frequent and affordable. The journey typically takes around 2 to 3 hours, with both standard and first-class options available. Alexandria's main station, Misr Station, connects directly to Cairo’s Ramses Station.

  • Luxor and Aswan: While longer, overnight sleeper trains from Luxor (around 9-10 hours) and Aswan (approximately 12 hours) offer a comfortable way to reach Cairo while enjoying scenic views of the Nile along the way. These trains are equipped with sleeping compartments, providing a unique experience for travellers.

Tickets can be booked through Egypt’s National Railways website or at the stations. It’s recommended to book in advance, especially during busy tourist seasons.

By Bus: Budget-Friendly and Convenient 🚌

Several bus companies operate services to Cairo from most major Egyptian cities. Some of the most reliable operators include Go BusSuper Jet, and Blue Bus, all of which offer modern, air-conditioned buses with different levels of service. You can take buses to Cairo from:

  • Hurghada: The journey takes around 6 hours by bus, with multiple departures throughout the day.

  • Sharm El Sheikh: Travelling by bus from Sharm El Sheikh involves a longer journey, taking about 7 to 8 hours, but it’s a budget-friendly option for those who want to travel without flying.

  • Alexandria: Buses from Alexandria to Cairo typically take 2.5 to 3 hours and run frequently throughout the day.

Bus tickets can be purchased online or at bus stations in each city.

By Car: Enjoy a Road Trip to Cairo 🚗

For those who prefer to drive, Cairo is easily accessible by car from many parts of Egypt. The well-maintained highways connect Cairo to cities like:

  • Alexandria: The drive from Alexandria to Cairo takes about 2.5 hours via the Desert Road or the more scenic Agricultural Road.

  • Luxor and Aswan: While the journey from Luxor to Cairo is longer (about 9 hours by road), it’s a great option for those who enjoy road trips and want to stop along the way to explore small towns and archaeological sites.

💡 Disclaimer: While renting a car in Egypt may seem like a convenient option, I do not recommend it due to the hectic driving conditions and traffic in the country. Navigating through crowded streets and understanding local driving customs can be quite challenging for visitors. However, if you prefer to rent a car for your travels, you can do so through DiscoverCars, which offers a variety of rental options across Egypt.

Driving in Egypt can be a thrilling experience, but be prepared for Cairo’s busy traffic once you reach the city!

How to Move Around Cairo 🚗🚍

Getting around Cairo is quite convenient, thanks to the availability of various transport services that cater to different preferences and budgets. Uber and Careem are popular ride-hailing options that are not only affordable but also offer a comfortable way to navigate the bustling streets of the city. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can easily arrange for a ride to your desired destination, making it simple to hop from one attraction to another without the hassle of navigating public transportation.

If you prefer traditional taxis, they are readily available throughout Cairo. However, it's important to note that most taxis in the city only accept cash payments, so be sure to carry some Egyptian Pounds with you. While taxis are a viable option, they may not always use meters, so it's advisable to negotiate the fare before starting your journey to avoid any surprises.

For those who want to experience the local way of getting around, you can also consider using the Cairo Metro system. This efficient and economical public transport option is a great way to beat the traffic, especially during peak hours. The metro connects various parts of the city and is a popular choice for both locals and tourists. Just be sure to check the operating hours and routes to plan your journey accordingly.

Lastly, if you’re feeling adventurous, you might want to explore the city on foot. Cairo's vibrant streets are filled with life, history, and culture, making walking an enjoyable way to discover hidden gems along the way. Just be mindful of traffic and stay aware of your surroundings!

Best Time to Visit Cairo ☀️🌡️

When planning your trip to Cairo, it’s essential to consider the climate to make the most of your experience. The best time to visit Egypt, in general, is from October to April, as this period offers pleasant weather and comfortable temperatures, ideal for exploring the city’s many attractions.

In Cairo specifically, if you’re looking for warm but not overly hot weather, the months of October, November, and April are particularly favorable. During these months, daytime temperatures typically range between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making it perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing without the oppressive heat that characterises the summer months.

While summer (June to August) is also a time when many tourists visit, be prepared for extremely high temperatures, often soaring above 40°C (104°F). This intense heat can make exploring the city's outdoor attractions challenging and uncomfortable. If you do choose to visit during the summer, plan your excursions for the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are slightly cooler, and don't forget to stay hydrated!

Visiting during the winter months (December to February) can also be enjoyable, as temperatures are mild, but evenings can get chilly. It’s wise to bring a light jacket if you plan to be out after dark.

Overall, choosing the right time to visit Cairo will enhance your experience, allowing you to enjoy the rich history and culture of this incredible city without being hindered by weather extremes.
