I’ll admit it—I used to dread the idea of travelling solo. The thought of stepping into a café, sitting alone, and eating by myself was a nightmare. As an introvert, I was all about solitude, but only within the comfort of my own home. Being alone in public spaces, especially in a foreign country where I didn’t speak the language or know anyone, seemed like an overwhelming, terrifying experience. I just couldn’t picture myself doing it.
The idea of solo travel terrified me. It wasn’t just the thought of being alone; it was the vulnerability that came with it. Being an introvert, I preferred having the safety net of a companion—someone to lean on when things got tough or when I felt uncomfortable. The thought of navigating a new city alone, figuring things out on my own, was a concept I couldn't even begin to process. But life, as it often does, had other plans for me.
Then, things changed. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that solo travel has become one of my favourite ways to explore the world. I’ve experienced so much personal growth, and I believe that everyone—whether introverted or extroverted—should experience the freedom that solo travel offers. From meeting amazing people to building lifelong memories, solo travel opens doors to experiences you never thought possible.

The Unexpected Beginning: A Year of Solo Travel Across Europe
The year of solo travel in Europe feels like a dream. It all started innocently enough with my studies in Spain. I arrived with excitement, ready for the adventure that was supposed to unfold. My family was planning to visit me soon, and I had my schedule packed with places to explore, people to meet, and experiences to have. But then came the global pandemic—a wrench thrown into everyone’s plans.
By March, Spain went into lockdown. Universities shifted to online exams, and cities came to a standstill. Suddenly, I found myself in an unfamiliar city, locked inside an apartment with no clear plans for the future. My family couldn’t visit, and with embassies closed, my options were limited. But instead of feeling sorry for myself, I made a decision that would change everything: I would explore Europe on my own terms.
I started small. Málaga and Setenil de Las Bodegas, two places in Spain, were my first destinations. While the initial experiences were far from perfect (think unexpected travel mishaps and language barriers), I fell in love with the freedom that came with exploring solo. Then came Lyon, France, where I reunited with an old friend. The real adventure began when I found myself unexpectedly in Luxembourg, a spontaneous detour that would lead me to one of my most memorable travels.
From there, my solo adventure continued to unfold in unpredictable ways. I couldn’t resist the lure of Portugal, so I went back to one of my favourite countries. Then came the Czech Republic—Prague, with its stunning architecture and rich culture, quickly became a destination I couldn’t stop thinking about. These unplanned stops were more than just about ticking off destinations; they were about discovering a new sense of independence, freedom, and adventure that I hadn’t known existed.
But of course, nothing is ever that simple. My trips to Austria and Italy were blocked by tightening COVID restrictions, and I found myself stuck in Madrid. At this point, I was emotionally drained, overwhelmed by the constant changes. So, I made the difficult decision to cut my trip short and return to Egypt, leaving my journey behind without much of a plan. But little did I know, my time spent solo travelling across Europe had already planted the seeds of change within me.

How Solo Travel Helped Me Overcome My Comfort Zone
Solo travel was more than just a getaway; it was a life-altering experience. I didn’t just visit new places—I transformed as a person. Looking back at my journey, here’s how it helped me break through the walls of my comfort zone:
1. I Discovered My True Independence
Before embarking on my solo travels, I thought I had a good understanding of myself. But nothing teaches you about your own strength like spending weeks on end without the comfort of familiar faces. I quickly realised how much I could handle on my own. Whether it was navigating train stations, dealing with unforeseen travel issues, or simply figuring out where to eat, I realised how much I thrived on my independence.
Solo travel stripped away the distractions and forced me to rely on my own instincts. It helped me see that I don’t need anyone to “complete” me—I am more than capable of making decisions, solving problems, and navigating life on my own terms.
2. I Learned to Enjoy My Own Company
At first, the idea of spending time alone was terrifying. But as I continued my travels, I learned to appreciate the moments of solitude. Whether it was sipping coffee at a café in Prague or wandering through the cobblestone streets of Lisbon, I found a new kind of joy in my own company. I learned to embrace the silence and the peace that came with being on my own, and I quickly realised that being alone doesn’t have to mean feeling lonely.
3. I Built Unshakable Confidence
Confidence isn’t something that’s built overnight, but solo travel sped up the process for me. I didn’t start my journey as the most confident person—I was often seen as shy and reserved. But over time, spending so much time in unfamiliar places, dealing with the unknown, and meeting strangers made me realise just how capable I was.
As I faced challenges—big and small—I began to trust myself more. I saw that I could handle anything life threw my way, and that feeling of empowerment became a cornerstone of my confidence. I became more assertive, more sure of my decisions, and more comfortable in my own skin.
4. I Learned to Be Flexible and Spontaneous
I’ve always been a planner—organised, controlled, and cautious about stepping out of my comfort zone. But when you’re travelling solo, you quickly learn that life doesn’t always follow a script. Unexpected detours, missed trains, and last-minute cancellations taught me how to embrace the unknown. Instead of getting frustrated, I learned to go with the flow, trusting that things would work out. Some of my best memories came from the moments I hadn’t planned for—like stumbling upon hidden gems in the back alleys of Lisbon or getting lost in the magic of Prague’s winding streets.
5. I Gained a New Perspective on Life
Perhaps the most significant change that came from solo travel was a shift in perspective. Meeting people from all corners of the world, experiencing different cultures, and stepping out of my comfort zone completely reshaped how I view life. The beauty of solo travel is that it opens your eyes to a bigger world—one that’s full of diversity, possibility, and endless adventure. It made me realise how much I’d been holding back and how much more life had to offer if I just stepped outside my bubble.

Reflecting on the Journey: A Changed Person
Solo travel is not just about visiting new places. It’s about discovering who you are when no one else is around to define you. My year in Europe changed me in ways I never thought possible. I came back a different person—more confident, more independent, and more attuned to my own desires and strengths.
If you’ve never travelled solo before, this is your sign to take the leap. It won’t always be easy, and there will be moments when you doubt yourself, but the growth you’ll experience is worth it. I wouldn’t trade my solo travel adventures for anything, and I encourage you to start your own journey of self-discovery.
